Industrial performance

We explain how downtime, speed and quality losses differ, and how to compare water and energy use with production output.

Find the Production Losses That Quietly Add Up - A factory can meet its daily output target and still lose productive time, waste resources or repeat avoidable work. Better visibility into equipment activity and resource use helps teams investigate those losses and decide where improvement will matter most.

Start with one operational question

A useful project begins with a question that someone can act on. Which recurring stop interrupts a line? Why does a process consume energy between production runs? Has water use increased per acceptable unit produced?

Choose the measurement and the person responsible for following it up. This gives sensor information a purpose and keeps the project focused on an operational result.

Separate the different kinds of loss

Overall Equipment Effectiveness, or OEE, is one way to examine manufacturing losses. It combines availability, performance and quality. Availability concerns lost planned production time; performance concerns slow running and small stops; quality concerns output that does not pass first time.

The factors are multiplied rather than averaged. Illustratively, 90% availability, 95% performance and 98% quality produce an OEE of 83.79%. Looking at the factors individually helps a team choose what to investigate.

An OEE score needs agreed definitions and reliable inputs, including planned time, runtime, ideal cycle time, production counts and quality results. A sensor reading alone does not supply every input.

Put resource use in context

Water and energy readings can add another perspective. A higher daily total may be entirely reasonable if output has increased. Comparing consumption with acceptable output can help distinguish increased activity from a possible efficiency change.

Product mix, start-up conditions and production schedules also matter. Compare like with like before attributing a change to waste or equipment performance.

Connect the information where it is needed

Tigertek’s approach combines multi-protocol sensor connectivity, encrypted communications, local intelligence and mesh networking. For industrial applications, the opportunity is to make compatible equipment and resource information available through a practical local arrangement.

Suitably positioned mesh nodes can relay information across a planned network. Actual interfaces, message sizes, reporting intervals and coverage need to suit the site. Internet access can remain optional for local operation; access from another location needs an appropriate external connection.

Useful information can come from different sources. Equipment status may indicate a stop, but an operator or production record may still be needed to explain its cause. Quality outcomes need appropriate inspection or process records.

Measure the effect of the action

A pilot should establish a baseline, identify a loss and record the action taken. Compare the result under similar operating conditions. Check whether a shorter stop, better operating practice or repaired leak produced the expected change.

Assess the full cost of the project alongside its benefit, including sensors, installation, integration, maintenance and any external services. Keep availability, quality and resource use visible together so an improvement in one area does not hide deterioration elsewhere.

Reliable data and a recorded response create a more useful basis for expansion than a generic savings promise.

The Tigertek opportunity

Tigertek’s opportunity is to connect compatible industrial information to the people who can use it. That can support investigations into recurring stops, consumption patterns and equipment behaviour across an industrial site.

Better visibility helps teams choose a practical improvement, assess its effect and decide what to do next. The connection is valuable when the information leads to an informed action.
