What is Mesh ?

Mountains. Glens. Remote farms. Dense urban buildings. Underground spaces. Industrial sites. Wherever a conventional connection becomes difficult, vital sensor information can be left stranded. At Tigertek, we believe the communications challenge should not dictate where useful data can be collected. Mesh communications offers another way to connect the dots.

What is mesh communications?

A conventional radio connection usually sends information directly from a device to a receiver or gateway. In a mesh network, suitably equipped radio nodes can communicate with one another and relay information across multiple links. Instead of demanding one long, uninterrupted path, data can travel in stages, from node to node, towards the point where it is needed.

Why does that matter?

Real environments are rarely ideal. Hills obstruct signals. Buildings absorb or reflect radio energy. Industrial equipment, water, distance and changing weather can all complicate communication. Carefully positioned mesh nodes can provide alternative paths around obstacles and extend practical coverage beyond a single direct radio link. Depending on the network design, an alternate route may also help maintain service if one link becomes unavailable.

From unreachable places to useful information

Consider a pressure sensor beyond a ridge, a water-monitoring point down a glen, an environmental sensor on an isolated site or equipment hidden deep within a complex building. Where direct communications are unreliable or impractical, a well-engineered mesh can bring measurements back through a sequence of strategically placed nodes. Those readings can then reach a local display, controller, operational team or other authorised destination.

The inventive R&D behind the connection

Mesh is not a magic signal that travels through every obstacle. Making it work demands radio-frequency knowledge, practical research and development, antenna selection, power planning, security, installation discipline and testing in the actual environment. Tigertek draws on extensive radio-communications experience and inventive R&D to explore workable routes where ordinary approaches fall short. The engineering question is not simply whether a radio can transmit; it is how a dependable end-to-end system can deliver useful sensor data at an appropriate cost.

More than just extending range

A successful sensor communications solution must balance reliability, energy consumption, data rate, latency, maintenance and resilience. Mesh can be particularly valuable for modest sensor messages across challenging terrain, but each deployment requires its own link budget, node spacing and site survey. Mesh may reduce reliance on a single long-range connection, yet it does not eliminate the need for sensible network design or appropriate security.

Sensor data where it belongs

Tigertek's wider approach is straightforward: sensors produce information; intelligent communications move it; people and systems receive it where they need it. That may mean a local display without a mandatory cloud service, a customer-controlled network, or an appropriate integration with existing infrastructure. The objective is not connectivity for its own sake. It is dependable, actionable information.

Tough terrain? Trapped data? Try Tigertek.

From remote rural landscapes to industrial environments, difficult communications are precisely where creative engineering can make a difference. If a sensor location seems out of reach, we would welcome the challenge. Tell us where the data is, where it needs to go and what stands in the way.
